Today, we’re posting a message in the message center to all customers who have PC’s managed using the PC software client or the Storage Add-On licensing offer. Read the full message below. We’ll continue to update this post as needed.
Microsoft Intune will retire support for the Silverlight-based Intune console on October 15, 2020 . This retirement includes ending support for the Silverlight console configured PC software client (also known as the PC agent) used for Windows PC management. In addition, Intune will end the Intune Storage Add-On licensing offer which was only used for app storage in Silverlight. Move your day-to-day Intune administration from Silverlight to https://devicemanagement.microsoft.com.
How does this affect me?
Our telemetry indicates you have PC software client managed Windows devices that will need to be MDM enrolled in order to stay managed by Intune past the above-reference date.
What do I need to do?
As you move forward with PC refresh or updates, enroll new Windows 10 devices into the MDM channel instead of using the PC software client. For existing PC software client devices, you’ll want to remove the PC software client and enroll the device in the MDM channel instead. Basic steps are:
- Get familiar with device administration at https://devicemanagement.microsoft.com.
- Recreate your existing Windows 10 policies as MDM policies. Note that many device management policies were migrated several years ago as part of the admin console migration, so double check device management in Azure before you create any policies.
- Review reporting in Silverlight to find those PC’s that are managed by the PC software client.
- Decide the right modern enrollment mechanism for your organization. You can review your options here: Step 5 – Enroll devices in Microsoft Intune | Microsoft Learn.
- Unenroll devices with the PC software client and re-enroll the device using MDM. We strongly recommend you update to the latest version of Windows 10. As previously announced, Intune ends support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020.
- If you do use the Intune Storage Add-On licensing, note that it is not needed when you use the MDM channel for managing your PC’s with Intune. Ensure apps are loaded using any of the mechanisms described here: Add apps to Microsoft Intune | Microsoft Learn.
This change will allow you to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities available through the MDM channel for Windows management. We encourage you to migrate as soon as possible, and no later than October 15, 2020. After that date, the Silverlight-based Intune console will no longer be accessible. PCs managed with the PC software client will stop receiving security updates and apps, and will no longer be able to be configured.
